In addition to our technology advantage and the solution piece, we have another arrow in our quiver, which is funding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The company originally developed its Carrier Gas Extraction evaporator technol\u00adogy and its RO Infinity brine concentra\u00adtion solution for the unconventional oil and gas market in America\u2019s Permian Basin, and set up Gradiant Energy Services to sell systems on a take-or-pay basis. When that market softened, the company opened a second headquarters in Singapore and started selling the same technologies to the broader industrial water market in Asia. The outsourcing model proved popular, although design-build sales still dominate.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Gradiant CFO Luke Johnson believes outsourcing is good for both sides: \u201cThere is a certain amount of operational integra\u00adtion that needs to happen for customers to get comfortable with us being on site oper\u00adating equipment, but it is not their core business,\u201d he explains. \u201cFrom our perspec\u00adtive we are taking a bit of a bet on an asset class, but in our view it is only going to go one way because of all the tailwinds we are experiencing on the macro side, whether it\u2019s green, it\u2019s water, it\u2019s emerging markets, it\u2019s sustainability, or ESG [environmen\u00adtal, social and governance concerns]. They are not always particularly easy projects to qualify and execute, but we think owning them is easily the best strategy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In Asia it has worked in downstream oil and gas, pharmaceuticals, and since the acquisition of Sigma in September last year in food &amp; beverage and microelectronics growth has not stopped with the pandemic; the company has sold systems to personal protection equipment manufacturers. The acquisition of CRS Water in Australia improved Gradiant\u2019s project delivery capa\u00adbilities and added sludge expertise. The company does not divulge its revenues, but GWI estimates they are in the $50-75 mil\u00ad lion range in 2021. \u201cBy 2022 we would be somewhere in the region of an H20 Inno\u00advation or something like that. It is a very different trajectory from that of other start\u00ad ups in water tech,\u201d Govindan remarks. The US is once more a focus of growth, although Gradiant Energy Services is being reintegrated into the parent company, with much of its equipment redeployed.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>So what\u2019s new in the technology pipe\u00ad line for Gradiant? The resource recovery proposition \u2013 especially lithium extraction, is an important research focus, but there are others. \u201cOne thing that we are really excited about is our digital solutions. We have this platform we are calling Smart\u00ad Ops. It\u2019s unique for zero liquid discharge and minimum liquid discharge,\u201d says Govindan. Continuous optimisation of sys\u00adtems with variable feedwaters is one of the biggest challenges for ZLD and MLD tech\u00adnologies. In fact, part of Govindan\u2019s PhD thesis was on the subject. Solving it would not only provide a competitive edge for Gra\u00addiant.
