Chip fabs around the world are now racing to catch up to the world\u2019s many microelectronic needs. And chip fabs need a lot of water to operate.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>By\u00a0some estimates, a large chip fab can use up to 10 million gallons of water a day, which is equivalent to the water consumption of roughly 300,000 households.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>While semiconductor companies have long understood that water access is a key element to their business, over the past decade that awareness has become more acute. Back in 2015,\u00a0a drought in Taiwan\u00a0(where 11 of the 14 largest fabs in the world are located), led Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. to open up its plants to inspection to demonstrate their water conservation efforts. Also in 2015, Intel made it known that it had reduced its water consumption by over 40 percent from its 2010 levels in response to the arid conditions at the sites where its plants are located.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Since that time, water recycling at semiconductor plants has continued to increase, according to\u00a0Prakash Govindan, chief operating officer at\u00a0Gradiant, a company that offers end-to-end water recycling technologies to a range of industries, including semiconductors.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\"Il trattamento convenzionale delle acque reflue negli impianti di semiconduttori ricicla dal 40 al 70% dell'acqua utilizzata nei processi\", spiega Govindan. \"Alcuni produttori riciclano ancora solo il 40% dell'acqua che utilizzano\".<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Tuttavia, negli ultimi due anni Gradiant ha lavorato con gli impianti di semiconduttori, migliorando il riutilizzo dell'acqua in modo da poter riciclare il 98% dell'acqua utilizzata.
