Original post: <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/gradiants-clever-leverage-poes-law-antoine-walter-jtlle\/?trackingId=g3RCO2PqRgmuo6AHvu49OQ%3D%3D%20%20%20\"><em>Antoine Walter, LinkedIn<\/em><\/a><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9f343fe elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"9f343fe\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"article-main__content\" data-test-id=\"publishing-text-block\"><p><strong>Gradiant&#8217;s bet is paying off<\/strong><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>The business strategy of focusing first on industrial water users wasn&#8217;t intuitive (at all) when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/ACoAAAI8KRUBTdxf00zxRhQ6qCHKJYdElW80m0I?miniProfileUrn=urn%3Ali%3Afs_miniProfile%3AACoAAAI8KRUBTdxf00zxRhQ6qCHKJYdElW80m0I\">Prakash Govindan<\/a> \uadf8\ub9ac\uace0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/ACoAAAEq_tgBvrxR7Sb9Y4HQEHwdk_b5fGMtkTk?miniProfileUrn=urn%3Ali%3Afs_miniProfile%3AACoAAAEq_tgBvrxR7Sb9Y4HQEHwdk_b5fGMtkTk\">Anurag Bajpayee<\/a> started Gradiant out of their respective MIT research projects.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>In the early 2000s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=SMSN7T8DYdk\">Veolia&#8217;s ventures across North America<\/a> were looking first and foremost at the municipal market, and when Siemens took over US Filter to make it an industrial synergy, it didn&#8217;t end up well. (Same stories for SUEZ and even GE Water&#8217;s Betz acquisition story)<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>Yet, as counter-intuitive as it was, that focus &#8211; coupled with strong business model takes &#8211; turned Gradiant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Hpk_gPjm_1s\">into the first-ever water tech unicorn<\/a>.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>But many would still stop you with a smirk smile at congresses and tradeshows by saying, <em>&#8220;Yay, that&#8217;s valuation, but the proof is in the pudding, isn&#8217;t it?&#8221;<\/em><\/p><p><strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p><p><strong><em>So, let&#8217;s look at the pudding. <\/em><\/strong><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>When I discussed with Prakash earlier this year, he shared how Gradiant reached a $200 Million revenue in 2023, with a $500 Million backlog.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>That&#8217;s where this press release takes it to the next step: the company would have signed $337 Million of orders in Q1 of 2024, with over $500 Million over the entire first half.<\/p><p><em>(I&#8217;m using the conditional because, as Gradiant is not public, these results sharing are not binding)<\/em><\/p><p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p><p><strong>What&#8217;s cooking here?<\/strong><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>I&#8217;ve said it in the past; I&#8217;ll say it again: I&#8217;m a finance muggle. So, take my <em>&#8220;analysis&#8221;<\/em> with a pinch of salt \ud83d\ude00<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>Gradiant gained its unicorn status in 2023 through their $225 Million Series D. That same year, they reached the $200 Million of sales I just mentioned.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>That&#8217;s a Price-to-Sales ratio of 5 to 1 <em>(if you&#8217;re even more of a muggle than me, the P\/S ratio is how much investors are willing to pay per dollar of sales)<\/em><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>For a Tech Company, that&#8217;s <strong><em>low<\/em><\/strong>. But for an industrial company, that&#8217;s <strong><em>high<\/em><\/strong>&#8230; so, let&#8217;s say it&#8217;s average if we say Gradiant is an <em>&#8220;industrial cool kid&#8221;<\/em><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>Anyways, that&#8217;s not outrageous for a high-growth company.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>Now, with (allegedly) $500 Million of orders in the first half of 2024, it would be reasonable to anticipate a $1 Billion full-year for Gradiant&#8230; which is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalwaterintel.com\/articles\/gradiant-diversifies-to-hit-1bn-sales-target\">their sales target for 2026<\/a>!<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>Apply the same P\/S, and that would mean Gradiant&#8217;s valuation would rise to $5 Billion. So give them one more year, and they are a <strong><em>decacorn<\/em><\/strong>!<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>Now&#8230;<\/p><p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p><p><strong>That&#8217;s if Gradiant stays a private company.<\/strong> Because actually, this kind of PR to comment on the first half&#8217;s results is very common for&#8230; public companies!<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>So, IPO on the horizon?<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>I&#8217;ll keep watching. \ud83c\udf7f<\/p><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-49ea7a4 elementor-widget-divider--view-line elementor-widget elementor-widget-divider\" data-id=\"49ea7a4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"divider.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-divider\">\n\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-divider-separator\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-50504d2 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"50504d2\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>More Gradiant news<\/strong><\/p><p>Within the company&#8217;s constellation, there are entities that &#8220;standalone&#8221;
