PFAS & Emerging
Contaminants

Emerging contaminants are new or re-emerged chemicals of concern found in medicines or personal care, cleaning, lawn care, and agricultural products, that may cause adverse health or environmental impacts. These include per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), a group of dangerous emerging contaminants (EC) chemically and biologically persistent in the environment. Governments are enforcing more stringent limits down to parts per trillion (ppt) to manage the health risks to humans and wildlife.

Traditionally, PFAS are removed by activated carbon filtration (ACF) followed by ion exchange (IX) polishing, but these methods have shortcomings. They are ineffective at removing shorter-chain PFAS compounds, and the solid wastes generated are prohibitively expensive to dispose of. Reverse Osmosis (RO) has been moderately effective in removing PFAS, but also generates a liquid concentrate waste stream that is difficult to dispose of due to higher TDS and PFAS concentrations.

Gradiant has developed a suite of technologies to overcome the challenges with these conventional treatment methods. Our solutions remove and destroy PFAS forever — not just the transfer of PFAS to another media, which continues to persist in the environment.

Our solutions deliver the following benefits:

  • Destroy and remove PFAS from the environment — forever
  • Minimize capital, operating, and total water costs
  • Reduce or eliminate off-site waste disposal
  • Meet increasingly stringent discharge limits
  • Adapt to newly identified emerging contaminants
